Home charging is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade for an EV owner. You stop planning your week around public chargers. But the install has a few decisions worth understanding before you buy hardware.
Level 1 vs Level 2. Level 1 is the cord that came in the trunk plugged into a normal outlet — roughly 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. That works if you drive very little. Level 2 runs on a 240V circuit and typically delivers 25 to 40 miles of range per hour, which fully recharges most vehicles overnight. Nearly everyone should install Level 2.
Hardwired vs NEMA 14-50 receptacle. A hardwired charger like the Tesla Wall Connector supports higher amperage and is the cleaner permanent install. A NEMA 14-50 outlet gives you flexibility — you can unplug the unit and take it with you when you move. Both are code-compliant when installed correctly; the right pick depends on your amperage target and whether you plan to stay in the home.
The part people underestimate: panel capacity. A Level 2 charger commonly needs a 50 or 60 amp circuit. Many older Miami homes simply don't have that headroom in a panel that's already full. This is why the first thing we do is a load calculation, not a sales pitch. Sometimes the honest answer is that you need a panel upgrade first — better to hear that before the charger is sitting in your garage.
Placement and conduit. Charger cables are typically 18 to 25 feet. We plan placement around where the vehicle's charge port actually sits when parked, and route conduit cleanly rather than draping cable across a wall. Outdoor and carport installs use weather-rated equipment built for salt air.
Permits. EV charger circuits require a permit in Miami-Dade and Broward. That's a good thing — it means the work is inspected and documented, which matters at resale and for any manufacturer warranty claim.
