Every year the same thing happens in South Florida: a storm enters the forecast cone and suddenly everyone wants a generator installed this week. Electricians are booked, equipment is sold out, and permits take time. The homeowners who are comfortable are the ones who handled it in the off-season.
Start with a manual transfer switch. A generator without a transfer switch tempts people into backfeeding — running a cord from a generator into a dryer outlet. That practice can energize the utility line outside and kill a lineman working to restore your power. It is genuinely dangerous and it is illegal. A manual transfer switch isolates your home from the grid and lets you power selected circuits safely.
Choose your critical loads deliberately. You usually cannot run the whole house. Sit down before the storm and decide what actually matters: refrigerator, a few lights, internet equipment, medical devices, a window AC or a single mini-split, and well or septic pumps if you have them. We label those circuits clearly so nobody is guessing in the dark.
Add whole-home surge protection. The damage from a storm often arrives after the storm — in the surges that come with utility restoration. A panel-mounted surge protective device is inexpensive relative to replacing every appliance, AC control board and TV in the house, and it protects against the everyday smaller surges too.
Inspect the weather-exposed equipment. Meter cans, disconnects, exterior outlets and outdoor lighting take a beating from sun, rain and salt air year-round. Corroded enclosures and cracked gaskets let water into places it should never reach. A pre-season inspection catches that cheaply.
